About Brian Gilham

My Ugly Mug

Brian Gilham is a 22-year-old journalist, photographer, and web developer living and working in Ontario, Canada. He is a graduate of the print-journalism program at Loyalist College and web development program at Durham College. Brian has completed written and photographic assignments for a variety of publications and clients, including the Kingston Whig-Standard, the Shark Tank Pub, On Your Own magazine, The Pioneer: Country Edition, and The Pioneer.

With four years of post-secondary education under his belt, Brian hopes to find work in the place where journalism and web development meet, perhaps developing code for organizations like the CBC, CTV, the Globe and Mail, and the Toronto Star. A long-time writer and programmer, he is passionate about typography and all the ways in which the Internet can save the world.

If you would like to hire Brian for your writing or code-related project, feel free to give him a shout.

About Ekonoline

Ekonoline has been online, in one form or another, since roughly 2000. Serving as a weblog since the summer of 2006, the site primarily focuses on topics like journalism, technology, programming, personal reflections, and more. A little bit of everything, really.

Originally hosted by a number of free hosting companies, Ekonoline’s files now happily reside on a server provided by the good folks over at MediaTemple. The site is powered by a loving mix of Wordpress, PHP, MySQL, and a smattering of plugins. The design is based upon the ever-expandable Thesis.

Files are edited using Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows XP, with Photoshop CS3 picking up the graphical duties. Finally, things are beamed up using FileZilla.

The Name

While no official explanation as to the origins of the name ‘Ekonoline’ has ever been given, various explanations have been used over the years to delight and confuse curious visitors. The popular assumption is that the name stems from the band Econoline Crush, who apparently took the name from a novel titled Jeu de Fountaine. Past visitors have also been told to look up Ford’s Econoline, or E-Series, line of vehicles. Unfortunately neither explains the use of a ‘k’ instead of a ‘c’. The mystery continues…
