News from the Convention: Where to Look

by Brian Gilham on December 1, 2006

For four Liberal leadership candidates, tonight is when the rubber will hit the road. Beginning at roughly 7:00pm, Stephane Dion, Michael Ignatieff, Gerard Kennedy, and Bob Rae will all have one last shot at convincing the party that they have what it takes to lead the charge against Stephen Harper and the Conservatives. It promises to be an exciting night and the news media will be there every step of the way.

Here’s what the major outlets have planned for the next two days:

  • CTV News: Follow the ballot results live on CTV’s website. Reporters and guest columnist Peter Donolo have been blogging about the convention from the beginning and will continue to do so. CTV Broadband features a live feed from the convention floor. Friday: Covering the candidate’s speeches from 7:00pm-9:00pm EST. Saturday: Beginning at 9:00am EST, will cover the proceedings until a new leader is chosen.
  • Global National: Beginning tonight and continuing through to tomorrow, Kevin Newman will host Global National live from the convention floor. Former Liberal strategist Warren Kinsella will be posting to his blog. Kevin Newman has posted an interesting entry about party conventions past.
  • CityTV News: Richard Madan will be blogging from the floor of the convention all weekend.
  • Globe and Mail: The paper is maintaining three separate blogs during the convention. Check out the opinions of a handful of Globe reporters, Jane Taber, and Dan Cook.
  • Toronto Star: A number of the Star’s columnists have written about the convention, including Richard Gwyn, Chantal Hebert, and James Travers.

This represents the best information I’ve been able to gather thus far. I will update the list as best I can as the day goes on. If you know of anything that should be included and isn’t, please e-mail me or leave a comment on this entry.

New York Magazine: Stephen Colbert

by Brian Gilham on October 13, 2006

According to a recently-posted article by Adam Sternbergh in New York magazine, Stephen Colbert has America by the ballots. The article, set to be published in the magazine’s October 16th edition, offers a rare glimpse into the mind and life of Stephen Colbert, the man behind the loud, crass, conservative persona of the same name. For fans of the show and its satire-savvy host, it is an intimate look rivaled only by Colbert’s appearance on 60 Minutes.

Although it took me a while to warm up to Colbert’s unique brand of parody, I now anxiously anticipate it every night. In my household, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have become catalysts for discussing the news, which we often watch while seated around the dinner table. The phrase, “I can’t wait to see what Jon Stewart does with that,” has become an almost nightly utterance.

I was there to do some jokes. I was there to do what I do. I expected maybe a whiff of brimstone. A soupçon of scandal. Did I expect this to be a line in the sand for people? No, absolutely not. -Colbert, discussing his appearance at the White House Correspondents’ dinner.

The article ends with a humorous how-to guide written by Colbert himself, advising the Democrats and Republicans how best to rally voters for the upcoming midterm elections. Check the entire thing out over at the New York magazine website.
